What is Counselling and How Can It Help Me?

Counselling is a safe and confidential space, held by a trained professional, where you can talk openly about anything. Your counsellor will help you explore, thoughts feelings and behaviours, while continually seeking deeper engagement and relationship. This will have profound effect on all aspects of life. As you learn more about yourself, you will experience change.

What to Expect in Your Initial Therapy Sessions

Every counsellor has their unique approach to starting therapy. With me, the first three sessions will normally include a focus on:

1. Introductions

a brief introduction where I might explain my approach and how I work. You might want to ask questions about my qualifications, experience, or anything else you’re curious about regarding therapy. I’ll also ensure you’re comfortable by addressing practical details like the time of the sessions and whether we acknowledge each other if meet on the street.

2. Assessment

During this stage, I might invite you to share your history and the challenges you’re facing. You may wish to share your story. This part is designed to give you the space to communicate what’s troubling you.

3. Contracting

We’ll discuss and agree on the terms of therapy, including how I will provide my services. This agreement may be verbal or formalized with a written document that both of us sign.

These initial sessions are crucial for establishing a sense of trust and comfort. If you feel we aren’t a good fit, you’re not obligated to continue. Your feeling of safety and ability to relate to me are top priorities.

How Long Does a Counselling Session Last, How Frequently Will We Meet?

Most therapy takes place in planned, regular sessions which last for around 50 minutes. How often you see your therapist and how many appointments you have will depend on your individual circumstances and will be agreed between us.

You will always see me on your own. Ideally face to face in my consulting room, but sometimes our sessions will be online or over the telephone.

How Do I Know if Therapy is Working for Me?

You’ll get the best results  if you’re open and honest with me and say how you’re really feeling.

Our relationship is very important. If we are to work effectively together, you should feel safe and able to take risks by disclosing and discussing sensitive issues. That includes being able to give me honest feedback on how you feel about your therapy and how we are working together.

There are many different types of therapists and therapy, so if you’re unsure about your therapist or their approach, you can look for another one.
